Time to test the 12-year old Generator

We purchased this house 10 years ago and it came with this portable generator. Previous owners had house/generator for 2 years. It had never been started, never had gas or oil put in it. House also had a separate circuit breaker/transfer switch.
Today we (yes, finally) decided to test her. Put in gas and oil and read the 'how to'. Started up in 3 pulls.
Well, we were happy, anyway!
We're slow but thorough =). Next, test under load.
(note, we added the wheels and front gromet-things.)

  • Wise Guy, eh? Actually, our main hope is we just "know it's out there just in case" but never really have to use it. We have a wood stove to keep us warm. And a couple of small Power Domes (portable batteries) to pop popcorn in the microwave =)
    We be ok.

  • Cool!

NOW is the time to test it - well, now minus ten years - when you DON"T need it. That way you will be ready for an emergengy.

Hook that puppy up to your transfer switch and see how much of a load it can handle (Refridgerator, TV, computer, etc.)

  • Knowing you two, I am sure it is not a problem, but be SURE to vent the generator to the outside. That exhaust could be deadly in your garage and...just because you added wheels...DON'T move that thing in to your front room to run your vacumm cleaner. :o)

  • Neighbor (retired engineer) said he help us test under load -- then he told us he set/installed his own up and the first time he ran it blew up his new TV, DVD, dishwasher, refrigerator and a couple of other things I don't recall (I was in shock) cuz 'red should have gone to black' or some such thing?) Said it is all ok now but replacing all those appliances was expensive!
We said we'll get back to you.....

  • Of course, your older brother is a retired engineer and my wife was an engineer for a while...so...

Me? I am a retired planner/finance guy, but I would have said 'red to red' & 'black to black'

  • I wasn't listening much to him after I heard 'blew up'...
